Bar Code Basics:

The structure of a bar code is extremely important to allow readers to properly and accurately read the information that has been placed in the code.  Basic code structure is shown below for code 3 of 9 or code 39 symology.   Certain standards must be maintained in all bar code applications and programming.  The width of the bars and spaces is vital to the proper reading of the code.  At ISG we follow these standards to insure that every application works properly and within the standards and specifications of the code.

Today, there are many standard codes established and used in industry and commercial applications.  Here is a short overview.

PDF417 Code:  This is the newest of the bar code family.  Technically PDF417 is a multi-data retention tool designed by Symbol Technologies, Inc.  Properly designed, this code contains a codeword that helps all included data to be converted to decimal equivalents between 0 and 928, inclusive.  There is a high degree of error detention capabilities in this code.  It can contain up to 4000 bytes of data and is used extensively in the transportation industry to include product and destination information.
